RSF voices concern over attack on Aklan anchor

MANILA, Philippines - An international media watchdog group voiced concern Tuesday (Manila time) over the shooting of a broadcaster in Aklan province last Jan. 2. Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders/RSF) said it is worried about the attempt on the life of Cherie "Katribung Che" Indelible in Kalibo. "With five journalists murdered, 2008 was one of the bloodiest years ever for the media in the Philippines, especially for radio presenters. The authorities must ensure that Indelible is protected and must redouble their efforts to rein in the violence against the press," RSF said on its website. Indelible works for local state-owned radio dyYM (Community Broadcasting Information System) as news director and program host. He was approaching his home on his motorcycle when he heard two gunshots apparently fired in his direction. After entering his home he immediately called the police. When he ventured outside a few minutes later, two more shots were fired and he sought refuge inside a nearby hospital. Police found bullets and cartridges from cal-.38 and cal-.45 handguns near the house but did not catch the gunmen. They arrested three alleged accomplices who named two men as suspects. Both are reputedly involved in criminal activities in the area. Indelible said he thought the murder attempt was linked to comments he made on the air. RSF noted he said received threats last year, mainly in connection with subjects discussed in his evening program "Bira-Birada." - GMANews.TV
