Navotas to vote on cityhood on Sunday

Navotas residents will vote on Sunday on whether the town becomes the 16th city in Metro Manila. Navotas Mayor Tobias “Toby" Tiangco urged residents to vote “yes" in the plebiscite on cityhood. “Converting our town into a highly urbanized city is what all Navoteños are longing for. I believe that it’s about time to grant us cityhood," Tiangco said. Following a plebiscite last June 16, San Juan became the 15th city of Metro Manila. If Navotas becomes a city, Pateros will be left as the lone town in the metropolis. The June 24 plebiscite will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will cover all 613 local precincts in Navotas’ 14 barangays (villages). Navotas passed the basic requirements for cityhood set in Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code, including an annual income of at least P50 million and a minimum population of 200,000. Navotas has reported an annual income of more than P339 million and a population of 265,846. -GMANews.TV
