43 fishermen still missing because of TS Kabayan —OCD

Forty-three fishermen are still missing in the Ilocos region, even after Tropical Storm Kabayan left the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Saturday.

According to Melchito Castro, the director of the Office of Civil Defense in the region, many of the missing fishermen were from Pangasinan and La Union.

The figure reached as high as 121 fishermen on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, three people have died as of Sunday afternoon, with the latest fatality found in Pangasinan.

The victim, identified as Artemio Quintero of Poblacion in Infanta town, went out fishing last Thursday,  Castro said.

Quintero's body was found in Barangay Tupa in Agno town on Saturday and claimed by relatives the day after, he added.

Castro said two others were confirmed dead by OCD-Central Luzon on Sunday. They were identified as Raquel Camilo (57, bitten by a snake) and Samuel Corcoro (29, drowned).

Figures showed that 40,841 families -- or 193,825 people -- were affected by Kabayan in Central Luzon. Some 124 families, or 620 people, are still in four evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, three families, or 15 people, were affected and evacuated in Ilocos region.

Damage to infrastructure and agriculture in Ilocos region, however, was placed at P20 million, while that in Central Luzon was recorded at only P1.1 million in Aurora as of Sunday.

Figures from the OCD regional offices have been sent to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's main office in Manila.

In an update on Monday morning, the NDRRMC identified Quintero as the lone fatality, while two others were injured and 27 still missing.

The agency said a total of 4,565 families -- or 22,368 persons -- are affected in the provinces of La Union, Aurora, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Zambales.

More than 1,300 of these families are being served in seven evacuation centers, it added. —Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/NB, GMA News
