General who led fight vs. NPA in Davao is new ISAFP chief


President Rodrigo Duterte has designated the commander of Philippine Army's 1001st Infantry Brigade based in Compostela Valley as the new chief of the Intelligence Service of the AFP (ISAFP), a military official said Wednesday.

Col. Edgard Arevalo, Armed Forces of the Philippines public affairs office chief, said Brigadier General Macairog Alberto is considered as a national security fellow and adept not only with combat operations but also with intelligence operations.

Alberto led the fight against New People's Army in the Davao region.

"He had successful stint in operations focusing in counter terrorism, counter-insurgency applied with educational training locally and abroad in the field of operations and intelligence,” Arevalo said of Alberto.

“He is expected to deliver, especially at this time that we are faced with challenges of terrorism, violent extremism, and the fact that the President declared that after Marawi, we will be focusing once more on counter-insurgency."

Alberto was a former commander of Task Force Davao and a recipient of various medical and awards including Distinguish Service Stars, Gold Cross Medal, and Bronze Cross Medal,

He will assume his new post on Friday replacing Maj. Gen. Ronald Villanueva, who has been designated as the new commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Cagayan de Oro City.

The former commander of 4th Infantry Division, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, took over as the head of Southern Luzon Command last Friday replacing retired Lt. Gen. Ferdinand Quidilla. —Amita Legaspi/KBK, GMA News
