Bong Go files COC, seeks Senate seat in 2019 polls

After much dilly dallying and fanfare, Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go finally on Monday filed his certificate of candidacy for senator in time for next year’s midterm polls.

Go, who has posters nationwide and is often seen wearing basketball jersey in his engagements, was accompanied no less than by President Rodrigo Duterte in filing his CoC at the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila.

“I have finally come to a decision to run for public office. Like my mentor, I would like to serve our countrymen. I would like to put the nation and the people first,” Go said.

“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa Diyos na nabigyan po ako ng pagkakataon na makapaglingkod sa isang katulad ni Pangulong Duterte,” Go added.

Also with Go were members of the Duterte administration’s Cabinet namely: Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Palace Communications Chief Martin Andanar, former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, outgoing Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano, Representative Wes Gatchalian of Alay Buhay party-list, among at least 23 other supporters even if Commission on Elections rules state that only four companions are only allowed per aspirant.

“Dahil po kay Pangulong Duterte, naging malalim at malawak ang aking pang-unawa  sa mga isyung hinaharap ng bansa. Natutunan ko rin sa ating Pangulo kung ano ang tunay na malasakit at tapat na serbisyo. Utang ko sa kanya kung anumang karunungan ang meron ako ngayon,” Go said.

Go said that in the event he wins a Senate seat, he will push for the creation of Malasakit centers across the country which would provide healthcare and other social services to the people as well as the repeal of the Juvenile Justice law which sets the minimum age of criminal liability at 15 years old,  meaning those aged 14 years old and below cannot be sent to detention and face charges.

“Kung saan po tayo mas makakatulong, kaya po sinubukan ko itong [pagtakbo sa Senado],” Go said.

Duterte said last week that Go can finance his Senate bid very well because the family of Go’s mother, the Tesoros, own the biggest printing company in Mindanao.

Go, however, has yet to make it to the top 12 or the winners’ circle in pre-election surveys.

Go is also mum on his possible replacement, saying that it is only the President who can answer such question. — RSJ, GMA News
