In the Second Quarter 2019 Social Weather Survey, fewer Filipinos said their lives improved compared to the March survey.

The second quarter survey found 36% of adult Filipinos saying their lives improved (gainers) and 22% saying their lives worsened (losers) in the last 12 months, or a net gainers score of +13 (gainers minus losers), classified by SWS as "very high."

This was 4 points lower than the +17 in March, SWS said.

The survey was conducted from June 22-26, 2019 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide: 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao (sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao).

The survey was non-commissioned.

Net Personal Optimism

The June 2019 survey also found 46% of adults as "optimists" or those expecting their quality of life to improve in the next 12 months, and 4% expecting it to get worse or the "pessimists," or for a net personal optimist score of +42.

Like the net gainers, the June 2019 net personal optimists score was 5 points lower than the +47 score in March.

Meanwhile, the net economic optimists score in June was also lower at +33 compared to the March score of +35.

Net Economic Optimism refers to expectations about the general Philippine economy, and is different from Net Personal Optimism which refers to expectations in personal quality of life, according to SWS.

Net gainers fall

The four-point decline in the national net gainers score in June 2019 can be attributed to decreases in all areas, except the Visayas.

It went down by 3 points in Metro Manila, 5 points in Balance Luzon, and 9 points in Mindanao. Meanwhile, it went up by 5 points in the Visayas.

Net gainers all fell in all classes — by 10 points among classes ABC, 2 points among class D, and 8 points among class E.  —LDF, GMA News
