Sanchez may be disqualified from grant of time allowance —Faeldon

Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon on Friday assured the public that the process of granting Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) for inmates will be strictly followed, saying that convicted murderer-rapist Antonio Sanchez "at a glance" may not qualify for the privilege.

Also he said that the review of Sanchez' case may be done in September and it will be opened for public scrutiny.

In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB's "Dobol B sa News TV" with news anchor Mike Enriquez, Faeldon said there are over 49  criteria in the BuCor manual for  granting GCTA, and violation of even one on these is already ground for disqualification.

"One of the criteria for instance is bad conduct. For that alone, he (Sanchez) was violating the rule. 'Di siya makuwentahan ng good conduct," Faeldon said.

He also cited the seizure of shabu in the former mayor's possession and the construction of a well-furnished structure inside the New Bilibid Prison, the national penitentiary.

Faeldon reiterated his statement last Thursday that "at first glance" Sanchez may not qualify for good conduct time allowance, saying, "Let us not assume na lalabas na siya."

Sanchez, a former Calauan, Laguna mayor convicted for the 1993 rape and murder of college student Eileen Sarmenta, is one of thousands of inmates eligible for the recomputation of good conduct time allowances on the basis of Republic Act No. 10592, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.

Rumors of his possible release on the basis of the law have enraged the public, forcing authorities to clarify the process of granting the good-conduct-time- allowance privilege.  —LBG, GMA News
