SENATE PROBE

3 convicts in Sarmenta-Gomez slay case already dead —Faeldon

Three men convicted for the 1993 rape and killing of UP Los Baños student Aileen Sarmenta and her friend Allan Gomez had died in jail, Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon told a Senate inquiry on Monday.

Answering a question from Senator Risa Hontiveros on the status of the convicts in the Sarmenta-Gomez case, Faeldon said three of them are already deceased, namely George Medialdea, Rogelio Corcolon and Zoilo Ama.

Faeldon, however, could not say the cause of death of the three.

"I will find out," Faeldon said when asked by Senator Richard Gordon, head of the Senate blue ribbon committee conducting the inquiry, on what caused the death of the three convicts.

Also convicted in the case was former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez, whose reported possible release on the basis of Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) had resulted in public outcry and triggered the Senate investigation.
