BuCor chief Bantag relieves 300 prison guards at NBP’s max security compound

At least 300 prison guards assigned at the New Bilibid Prison's maximum security compound have been relieved of their posts on orders of Bureau of Corrections director Gerald Bantag.

According to GMA News Jun Veneracion, the relief of hundreds of prison guards came in compliance with President Rodrigo Duterte's directive.

More than 500 policemen will be taking the place of the relieved prison guards.

Bantag was appointed to lead the BuCor after Duterte fired Nicanor Faeldon over the undue release of hundreds of heinous crimes convicts.

Convicts of such high profile heinous crimes such as the abduction and rape-slay of Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong were released due to the inappropriate application of the Good Conduct Time Allowance law which reduced their sentences.

Authors of the law and officials said heinous crimes convicts were not eligible for the benefits of the measure, meant to decongest the country's prisons.

The controversy then led to family members of convicts accusing BuCor officials of asking money from them in exchange for good conduct time credits.

Duterte let Faeldon go after a Senate inquiry into the issues. —NB, GMA News
