Duterte on precautions vs. COVID-19: ‘Naniwala pala kayo’

President Rodrigo Duterte gave a short speech in Malacañang on Wednesday as he took note of the precautions to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Duterte largely stuck to prepared remarks which he delivered before newly promoted officials of the military and police in less than five minutes.

“I’ve been told to - masyado naman takot itong corona na ito. They are discouraging long meetings and large congregation. Naniwala pala kayo. Sus,” he said.

The President has already defied the "no-touch policy" set by the Presidential Security Group to protect him from COVID-19.

During the event, Duterte shook hands with military and police officials, as well as their families.

“With the many challenges that the world is facing today, we need soldiers like you who are always ready to fight for our motherland’s sovereignty, defend the honor of our country, and secure the liberties of our people that we enjoy,” the President said in his speech.

He also said that the administration will provide them with “the tools and resources that you and your men will need to be able to fulfill your mandate.”

Among those present in the event were Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, Philippine Air Force chief Lieutenant General Allen Paredes, and Philippine National Police chief Police General Archie Gamboa, who is still recuperating after surviving a helicopter crash in Laguna last week. — MDM, GMA News
