Bayan hits Duterte's threats vs. Reds: Problems are not solved by shooting

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) on Wednesday evening criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for his threats against left-leaning parties, saying that problems are not solved by shooting people.

"The President should learn by now that problems are not solved by shooting people or ordering them arrested. There is a problem with hunger, delayed delivery of aid, and lack of health services," Bayan Secretary-General Renato Reyes said in a statement

While addressing the nation, Duterte warned communist parties against sowing discord amid the enhanced community quarantine, saying he would not hesitate to shoot them.

"Kaya wag kayo mag gawa ng kalokohan at mag-riot riot diyan because I will order you detained at bibitawan ko kaya pagkatapos na wala na itong COVID," Duterte said.

"Alam mo, we are ready for you. Gulo o barilin o patayan, I will not hesitate my soldiers to shoot you, I will not hesitate to order the police to arrest and detain you," he added.

Reyes pointed out that the 20 individuals arrested in Quezon City on early Wednesday were not members of any left group but had rallied due to hunger.

"Even without the Left, the people feel this hunger, as we have seen today," Reyes said.

"[H]unger affects everyone and so a spontaneous action happened. The police responded with arrests instead of food [...] Rather than make threats, the President should just deliver the aid sought by the people," he later added. -- BAP, GMA News
