Senators silently donating salaries for COVID-19 emergency —Sotto

Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Sunday said some senators have already been donating their salaries and more to help in the fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), only that they are silent about it.

Sotto made the remark after Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano announced that almost 200 lawmakers would donate their whole salaries for the month of May to augment efforts against the health crisis.

"Most Senators have already been doing that and even beyond their salaries. We just do not announce it," Sotto told GMA News Online in a text message.

Other government officials have also pledged their salaries to help in the COVID-19 relief efforts, including local government officials in Manila as well as Cabinet officials.

Earlier, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said elected officials of Manila will donate their salaries for the month of April —totalling P4.7 million —to the Philippine General Hospital located in the city's Ermita district.

"Sa maliit po naming kaparaanan, sana po ay makatulong ito sa pagpapalakas ng kakayanan ng ating nga frontliner sa healthcare sector para labanan ang outbreak ng COVID-19," Moreno said.

Meanwhile, most of Cabinet members have also committed to donate three-fourths of their salaries to augment the government’s funds in addressing the COVID-19 situation, said Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles.

The Cabinet official also said that members of Duterte’s executive team will donate their monthly salaries until December. —LBG, GMA News
