More than half of COVID-19 patients have zero to mild symptoms —DOH

More than half of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in the Philippines are asymptomatic or only show mild symptoms, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday.

Dr. Beverly Ho said that out of the country’s 5,660 COVID-19 cases, 4,237 or 75 percent only show mild symptoms while 530 or 9 percent are asymptomatic.

Sixty-five or 1 percent of patients are in severe condition while another 31 or 1 percent are already critical.

The number of recovered COVID-19 patients continued to be more than the death toll on Thursday after the DOH reported a record-high 82 new recoveries compared to 13 more fatalities.

Recoveries now total 435 while the number of deaths rose to 362.

Ho explained that the number of recoveries could be more than what is reported since the data presented by the DOH “currently reflects only those who did the repeat tests.”

“Because science is evolving, we have shifted that the polymerase chain reaction tests will not be effective in capturing the presence of a virus in the patient especially if they are on their way to recovery already," she said.

“Dahil dito, ang clinical improvement at resolution of symptoms ay sapat na to send the patient home ngunit they still need to remain isolated for 14 more days.” -NB, GMA News
