Duterte declares May 25 holiday for Eid’l Fitr; reminds observance of social distancing

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Monday, May 25 this year as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadhan.

“The entire Filipino nation should have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr, subject to existing community quarantine and social distancing measures,” according to Proclamation No. 944 as tweeted by GMA’s Joseph Morong.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Monday, May 25, 2020 a regular holiday throughout the country,” the proclamation added.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments, including Muslim-majority countries, to impose restrictions such as temporary closure of mosques, curfews and ban on social gatherings.

Eid’l Fitr is celebrated by the Muslim world for three days after the end of Ramadan, which calls for spiritual reflection through praying, fasting, and abstaining from sinful behavior.

Muslims also make extra efforts to help others in need during Ramadan. —LDF, GMA News
