Kids tell Leni of slippers on the roof, losing modules to Ulysses' floods

Children taking shelter at the Nangka Elementary School in Marikina City in the aftermath of the raging floods due to Typhoon Ulysses lamented losing their slippers and learning module while fleeing to safety.

In a video posted by Vice President Leni Robredo on her Twitter account during her visit to the evacuation center on Friday, children took turns of telling their stories of survival to the Vice President, mainly of them having no slippers because they left them in the roof.

The video opened with a boy in the background telling the Vice President, "itong dalawa po [na bata], 'wala kaming tsinelas (we lost our slippers),'" pointing to a little girl in white sando beside him.

Realizing that it was her that the boy was referring to, the girl replied, “sa bubong [ang tsinelas ko]... nabaha (it's on the roof).”

Another boy, meanwhile, said, "‘yung module namin, inanod (our learning module got swept away)," referring to printed learning materials provided to students in the absence of face-to-face classes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The little girl who lost her slippers on the roof echoed the little boy, saying "‘yung module namin, inanod.”

Robredo tried to assure the children that it will be alright, saying that his teacher will give them a new copy of the module.

Another little girl in yellow shirt then motioned to the Vice President that she had to swim amid the flood, to which Robredo asked, "hindi ka nalunod kasi marunong ka mag-swimming?"

The previous little girl in white sando butted in again, describing the floods as “parang swimming pool.”

Robredo captioned the video by describing it as "masinsinang usapan (a sincere talk)."

Robredo also said that she shared the video of her conversation with the children with the permission of the parents.

Robredo and her team distributed hot meals, drinking water, mattresses, face masks, and diapers for babies and adults to evacuees during her visit at the Nangka Elementary School.

Prior to her visit in Nangka, Robredo led her office’s relief operations in Brgy. Tumana, Marikina City and Kasiglahan Village Elementary School in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Typhoon Ulysses has left 39 dead and 22 missing as of Friday.

Moreover, at least 401,800 individuals have been evacuated due to the raging floods caused by typhoon Ulysses. -MDM, GMA News
