Relatives of Pinay with UK virus variant test negative for COVID-19

The relatives of the Filipina who was found to have a new coronavirus variant in Hong Kong have tested negative for the COVID-19.

According to a “24 Oras Weekend” report on Sunday, the swab samples taken from the relatives, who live in Solana, Cagayan, have been sent to Manila for confirmatory testing.

Last week, Hong Kong authorities announced that a traveler from the Philippines tested positive for the coronavirus variant initially discovered in the United Kingdom.

This variant is more infectious but there are no indications yet that it causes a more severe illness.

The Department of Health (DOH) later confirmed that the passenger was a 30-year-old overseas Filipino worker.

She tested negative for COVID-19 on December 19, prior to her departure from the Philippines, but tested positive in Hong Kong when she took another test January 2. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
