Palace defends limited face-to-face classes for students of medicine, allied health sciences

Malacañang on Tuesday defended the government’s decision to allow the conduct of limited face-to-face classes for students of medicine and allied health sciences especially in areas at low risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Speaking at a news conference, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the resumption of limited in-person classes and training in those fields will benefit the country’s healthcare system in the near future.

“‘Pag hindi natin ipinagpatuloy iyan eh may darating pong panahon na wala tayong magiging graduates and at a time of pandemic we need all the doctors we can have,” he said.

Roque confirmed that the Office of the President has approved the recommendation of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to allow in-person classes in areas under general community quarantine and modified GCQ.

Asked whether President Rodrigo Duterte would rescind the approval given his concerns about the new coronavirus variants, Roque said, “You cannot second-guess the President.”

Other schools that wish to hold limited face-to-face classes must submit an application, according to CHED.

Education authorities will then visit the campus to inspect its compliance with requirements for face-to-face classes. -MDM, GMA News
