3,356 new COVID-19 cases push Philippines' total to 597,763


The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday reported an additional 3,356 COVID-19 cases bringing the total to 597,763.

Total recoveries were recorded at 545,912 after 61 got well from the illness, while five new deaths push the tally to 12,521.  A total of 39,330 were active cases.

The number of COVID-19 cases has been going up at a faster rate lately with the past few days reporting over 3,000 new infections daily.

Health Undersecretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire said lapses in compliance with safety protocols contributed to the spike in new cases.

“As long as our public would not be able to comply with the minimum health protocols that are there, nandiyan talaga yung posibilidad na dadami at dadami ang kaso. At ngayon dumating yung variants, it has aggravated this increase in the cases,” she said.

Despite this, Malacanang ruled out the possibility of imposing a full-scale lockdown.

There are 60% to 75% available beds in intensive care units, isolation facilities and hospital wards for COVID-19 patients, and 77% of ventilators were unused as of March 7, according to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.—LDF, GMA News
