8,615 new COVID-19 infections reported; active cases at over 82K

The Philippines on Tuesday reported 8,615 new COVID-19 infections, raising the country's total tally to 2,683,372.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the "relatively low" caseload was due to lower laboratory output on Sunday.

The Health department said the new cases brought the total active infections in the country to 82,228. This is the lowest number of active cases since the 81,399 on August 11.

Of the total active case count, 73.2% are mild, 14.2% are asymptomatic, 3.8% are severe, and 1.6% are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries rose to 2,561,248 after 25,146 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness.

The death toll climbed to 39,896 with 236 new fatalities.

The DOH said 57 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 120 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases.

The DOH said all laboratories were not operational on October 10, while three laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.

Data from the DOH also showed that 68% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are utilized, while 50% of the mechanical ventilators are also in use.

In Metro Manila, 66% of the ICU beds are in use, while 51% of the ventilators are utilized.—LDF, GMA News
