Phivolcs: 7 quakes recorded at Taal Volcano

At least seven volcanic quakes were recorded around restive Taal Volcano in Batangas in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Friday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also noted weak steaming activity even as it said Alert Level 1 stays. "Alert Level 1 is still enforced over Taal Volcano. This means that a hazardous eruption is not imminent. However, the public is reminded that the Main Crater should be strictly off-limits due to sudden occurrence of steam explosions and accumulation of toxic gases," it said in its Taal update. It added the northern portion of the Main Crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increased steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures. Phivolcs reminded the public that the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. In Sorsogon, meanwhile, at least two volcanic quakes were recorded around Bulusan Volcano in the last 24 hours. Phivolcs said Bulusan Volcano’s status remains at Alert Level 1, adding that entry to the 4-km PDZ is strictly prohibited due to sudden steam and ash explosions that may affect the area. Bulusan exploded on Monday, sending an ash column three kilometers into the air. "Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ash falls," it said. In Albay, Phivolcs said one volcanic quake and one rockfall event were recorded near Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours. Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 likewise remains in effect over Mayon Volcano. "While this means no eruption is imminent, it is recommended that the public should not enter the 6-kilometer radius PDZ due to the continuing threat from sudden small explosions and rockfalls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano," it said. — LBG, GMA News
