At least two people suffered minor injuries after a Philippine National Railways train was derailed at a flooded part of Sariaya town in Quezon province before dawn Friday.

PNR spokesman Paul de Quiros said the incident occurred at Barangay Canda, even as the affected train's 120 passengers were transferred to another train.

"May dalawang minor (na nasaktan), na-derail, pero walang problema ‘yan ... Nilipat ang 120 passenger sa waiting train from Lucena para makapunta ng Manila," de Quiros said in an interview on dzRH radio.

He also said PNR engineers are working to repair the damaged train and tracks. He said they expect repairs to be completed within the day.

A separate dzRH report said three of the train’s cars were damaged, with some passengers heading for Bicol still waiting for another train.

It quoted some passengers as saying they were sleeping when they felt a jolt. Some 20 of the passengers were brought to a nearby hospital to be checked for injuries.

Citing initial reports, de Quiros said a portion of the land softened due to floods.

"May portion doon, nag-soften nang todo ang area kaya pagdaan ng train gumalaw nang todo ang riles," he said.

He said that as a precautionary measure, PNR trains go slow in areas where tracks are flooded.

For now, de Quiros said repairs are going full blast at the affected area.

"Ang ibang areas other than that portion tsine-check," he added. –KG, GMA News
