‘My Way’ strikes again? Man killed in videoke row over Sinatra classic

And so another one faced "the final curtain."

A man was killed and another was wounded in a stabbing incident in Legazpi City, Albay, on Sunday, after a couple of drinking buddies had an argument over who should have sung "My Way" on the videoke, a report from the local police there said.

According to the police, the suspect, 25-year-old Sammy Dacutanan Jr. was out drinking at the videoke bar with the victims—Ricamara Policardo, 44, and Gener Flores, 38—when he requested the Frank Sinatra classic.

When the music started playing, however, Policardo, a resident of Cavite City, "insisted" that he should sing the song instead, which resulted in an argument.

The stabbing happened "upon their return to their barracks" at the LCC Mall, where Dacutanan "confronted Ricamara and immediately stabbed [him] at the left back portion of his body using a bladed weapon."

The suspect, who "fled after the incident," also struck Flores, who tried to pacify him, the report said.

Policardo was declared dead on arrival at the Tanchuling Hospital in Legazpi City, while Flores was brought to the Albay Doctors Hospital, then to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital, to treat a stab wound on his right arm.

While a beloved classic, many karaoke and videoke patrons dare not touch "My Way," which seems to be linked to a number of killings in bars across the Philippines over the years.

Some bar owners have even "removed the song from their playbooks," a report from the New York Times said in 2010.

According to the report, authorities "do not know exactly" the number of people killed or fatal fights started because of the song, but the media "have recorded at least half a dozen victims in the past decade," which they included "in a subcategory of crime dubbed the 'My Way Killings.'" — Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/BM, GMA News
