ARMM governor: Terror groups like ASG capable of Sulu blasts

Terrorist groups like the Abu Sayyaf Group are capable of launching attacks such as the deadly twin blasts at a Jolo cathedral on Sunday, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Governor Mujiv Hataman said.

According to a report on GMA News TV Live, Hataman also dismissed claims that the bombing incident might have something to do with the recently conducted plebiscite for the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

Majority of the registered voters in Sulu were not in favor of the BOL which is set to create a new Bangsamoro region to replace the ARMM.

Hataman appealed to his constituents to remain calm and vigilant.

As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, the number of fatalities was 20, according to Philippine National Police-ARMM Director, Chief Supt. Graciano Mijares, though PNP Public Information Office acting chief Senior Superintendent Bernard Banac put the number of dead at 19.

State government forces in the area are on heightened alert. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
