Activist shot dead in Iloilo

An activist was shot dead in Arevalo, Iloilo City early Thursday morning.

Initial information from Police Regional Office VI identified the victim as Jory Porquia, 50, a resident of Barangay Sto. Niño Norte.

Authorities said the victim was inside his rented house when two unidentified persons arrived and shot Porquia which caused his instantaneous death.

Investigation is still ongoing on the incident, police said.

Meanwhile, the League of Filipino Students (LFS) identified Porquia as a well-known activist who had conducted feeding programs for poor communities affected by COVID-19 in Iloilo province.

The group has condemned the killing of Porquia.

"Fascists attacks continue while we’re in the middle of a pandemic. In this regime, those who genuinely help the poor and needy are threatened, harassed, and worst killed," the LFS said.

"Meanwhile, this inutile administration, people who are swore and mandated by the law to serve its constituents, have been failing terribly at addressing this health crisis because of its militaristic lockdown," it added.—AOL, GMA News
