Another short-lived phreatomagmatic eruption recorded in Taal

Another short-lived phreatomagmatic eruption was recorded in Taal Volcano on Thursday morning, according to James Agustin's report on Unang Hirit.

The report said the eruption, which reached 200 meters from main crater and was the seventh of such kind recorded since Wednesday, occurred at 6:47 a.m.

Six short-lived phreatomagmatic eruptions were recorded in Taal on Wednesday alone, the latest being at 9:41 p.m., the report added, citing Paolo Reniva of the Taal Volcano Observatory.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said Wednesday's short-lived eruptions produced short jetted plumes that rose up to 700 meters above the Main Crater Lake.

PHIVOLCS also said at least 60 volcanic earthquakes were observed in the area with weak background tremor. These earthquakes included five explosion-type earthquakes, 24 low frequency volcanic earthquakes, 21 volcanic tremor events with durations of two to four minutes, 10 hybrid earthquakes.

The low-level background tremor in the area stopped on Wednesday at 6:21 p.m. but resumed at 09:52 p.m., PHIVOLCS said.

The volcano emitted 11,397 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas on Tuesday.

SO2 gas emissions and steam-rich plumes were also seen coming out from the volcano due to the upwelling of volcanic gas that reached up to 2,500 meters and drifted southwest.

The Taal Volcano Island is gradually deflating since April and the entire Taal region is also undergoing a slow extension since 2020, according to PHIVOLCS.

Taal Lake has an acidity level of 1.59 on February 12 and 71.8 degrees Celsius temperature on March 4, it added.

PHIVOLCS has been expecting a phreatomagmatic eruption in Taal Volcano similar to the July 1 explosion.

Alert Level 3 remains over Taal Volcano, which means magma extruding from its main crater could trigger an "explosive eruption."  —KBK, GMA News
