Fashbook’s guide for rainy day dressing

In a tropical country where people are used to dressing for hot days rather than cold ones, it’s pretty hard to get around to dressing for rainy days. Usually, we just throw on our biggest hooded jackets, grab an umbrella, and hope for the best. However, we can’t always do that, especially when we have somewhere to be where we want to look good.

We at “Fashbook” believe that you should never sacrifice style when dressing for rainy days, so we decided to share a few tips that can guide you when getting ready to head out on a rainy day.

Give it the boot

How many times have you gone home with puddle water in your shoes? Aside from the fact that it’s annoying and gross, it can cause infections and diseases like leptospirosis. Solve this by getting yourself a pair of rain boots. Nowadays, rain boots need not be boring. A lot of shoe brands have started selling pairs in interesting colors and patterns to suit your style.

Mind your feet
If you’re headed some place where rain boots won’t be acceptable footwear, at least consider the style and material of your shoes. Go for materials and styles that are going to keep the water out. Keep the strappy sandals and cotton sneakers at the bottom of your shoe rack this rainy season and go for closed shoes like ballet flats or brogues.

If you need to wear heels, choose wedges over stilettos. That way, you don’t have to worry so much about slipping. Also, keep the peep-toed pairs at home and wear pairs made of leather or leatherette.

Get under an umbrella

Gone are the days when umbrellas had to be big, bulky, and boring. A lot of brands now carry umbrellas in all sizes and different patterns so you now have no excuse for leaving home without one. Choose an umbrella that’s either going to go with any outfit or just one that’s gonna give your rainy days a cheery pop of color.

Learn to layer
Layers are your friend, especially on days when it’s hot and sunny one moment, then cold and rainy the next. The easiest way to layer is to throw a scarf and jacket over your outfit. This works for most outfits, be it a dress and sandals number or a shirt and jeans combo. You can also do this in several different ways with different pieces such as vests, cardigans, blazers, etc. - all it takes is a little creativity! This is a more practical approach to rainy day dressing, especially here in the Philippines where it’s never consistently cold. By dressing in layers, you avoid getting really hot in a thick long sleeved outfit when the rain stops or when you go somewhere warm.

Go for a pop of color
Resist the urge to don outfits in dark colors like black, deep greens, blues, and grays. Instead, try giving your outfit a pop of color by choosing at least one bright piece. Try going for a colorful printed shirt or dress under your black jacket or do it the other way around and throw a bright blazer over a dark dress. This way, you can feel sunny even if the sun’s not up.

When it comes to rainy day fashion, try not to follow trends. Invest in pieces that will last you a long time and will be in fashion no matter what the trend is. Also, remember that even if you need to be comfortable and warm during rainy days, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be stylish at the same time. -CM, GMA News
