Pop Talk in Boracay

Commendations and awards from various lifestyle and travel websites and magazines have put Boracay on many a vacationer's must-visit list. As a result, many resorts and shops that cater to the international tastes of different travelers have opened on the island. In fact, restaurants in Boracay specialize in cuisines as vast as the nationalities of the foreigners who visit the island.

With a plethora of food destinations to choose from, where would be the best place to start?

Host Tonipet Gaba, travel blogger Gay Emami-Mitra, Mutya It Kalibo Ati-athian 2014 Abigail Seraspi, and Boracay-based German teacher Philipp Heinz help answer this dilemma by reviewing three new international-themed restos as Pop Talk celebrates its third anniversary in the island paradise of Boracay. Here are their final verdicts.

Thai Basil
D'Mall, Station 2
P150 to P570

Thai Basil, the newest food destination in D'Mall, is a restaurant that specializes in serving signature Thai dishes like tom yum, salads, and curries. The popular stir fry noodle dish Pad Thai, the hot and sour Tom Yum Goong, the pomelo-made salad Yum-sum-o, and the Pop Talk reviewer favorite Panang Curry Chicken are just some of the bestsellers in Thai Basil.

A self-confessed thai food lover, Gay gave perfect points for Thai Basil's dishes. She explained,"Mahilig na mahilig talaga ako sa Thai food. The Panang curry? Mukha lang siyang maanghang kasi pula siya. 'Pag sinabi mong curry ine-expect mo maanghang pero siguro medyo suited na rin siya sa Filipino taste."

"'Nung na-serve na 'yung food, parang 'wow'," Abi recounted. "Mukhang ang sarap lahat."

Apparently, the food didn't only look good, it also tasted good. "The satay was definitely almost on top, I would say. With delicious peanut butter sauce, there's actually nothing you can do wrong with that," commented Philipp. "It really comes close. There's not a difference if you go to Thailand and eat in a restaurant or if you go in Boracay and go to Thai Basil restaurant. The quality is excellent."

Final verdict: 9 pop points

Cozina Authentic Spanish

White Beach, Station 1
P120 to P500

One of the things that you should try when you're in Boracay is to dine outdoors. After all, it's not everyday that you get to eat with the sound of waves in the background and the feel of the island's famous white sands under your feet. Cozina, a recently-opened Spanish restaurant in Boracay, provides this option by setting up tables and chairs outside the resto for customers who want a food experience that is closer to nature.

Cozina's bestsellers include their Organic Green Salad, Seared Mozzarella with Seared Mushrooms and Oregano, Fried Calamari, and Eggs with Crispy Thin Fries. The “Pop Talkâ€Â reviewers loved these so much that they almost forgot that they are only appetizers. For the main course, Cozina offers a variety of paellas and steaks.

Gay has nothing but praises for Cozina. "From appetizer to main to dessert, sobrang-sobrang 'pop'."

Abi added that the sound of the waves made her dining experience at Cozina better. Philipp thought the same. He commented, "You have your feet in the sand and eating, I love that atmosphere."

Final verdict: 9 pop points

Tres Amigos Mexican Cantina
D' Mall, Station 2
P180 to P320

Authentic Mexican food at affordable prices. That's what Tres Amigos Mexican Cantina wants to offer to the many transients who visit Boracay everyday.

Opened in December 2013, Tres Amigos offers the following specialties: the Homemade Corn Soup, a spicy boiled dish made of corn; Tres Amigos Combo, a hearty combination of chicken, ground beef, and shrimp; ceviche, Mexico's own version of the local kilawin; and Beef Quesadillas, which is served with cheese and mushrooms. Mexican favorites like burritos, nachos and fajitas are also available.

"It's a 'pop' for me kasi nga nanggaling na ako sa Mexico before so parang feeling ko bumalik ako sa Mexico," shared Gay. "'Yung flavors nung pagkain, shoot sa banga. Hindi ko makalimutan 'yung corn soup. 'Di ko siya mapigilang kainin."

Was Tres Amigos successful in bringing real Mexican food to Boracay? German teacher Philipp thinks so. "The restaurant gave me a good reason to go to Mexico definitely soon."

Final verdict: 9 pop points
