REEL TIME MUNTING TANGLAW SYNOPSIS
NOVEMBER 10, 2018

English version

The numbers of inadequate teachers from kindergarten to senior high school have now reached to 75,000. This is why San Jose Elementary School in Donsol, Sorsogon started a program to attend this country’s worsening problem with education. The head teacher of the school, together with his volunteer little teachers is driven by a determination to build a community with zero non-readers. In a bamboo raft, they make sure that no child in their place will remain unschooled even if it means going against the strong currents of the river.

One of them is 12-year-old Dagul. Despite his struggles, Dagul carries in his heart the teachings of his very first teacher, her mom. This is why Dagul made poems for her mom on their next meeting, for they haven’t seen each other in six months.

As the school year reopens, teacher Ryan recognized the lack of volunteer little teachers for some of them have graduated elementary and are set to go to high school. With the belief that it takes a community to educate a child, teacher Ryan enjoined the community mothers to aid the reading program of their school. After their household chores, these mothers will brave the rivers just to reach the kids from the far-flung areas of their village.

Before this school year ends, teacher Ryan plans to widen his reading program. His dream is to make Donsol a zero non-reader town. Through his cart, a mobile library, and with his high school volunteers, they aspire to teach every child in their town and inspire them to give importance to education because today, 10 million Filipinos cannot read.

The story of hope and passion of these teachers of Donsol is on Reel Time presents Munting Tanglaw, this Saturday, 9:15pm on GMA News TV 11.
