'Wagas': Lessons from heartbreak

Boy and girl meet. They fall in love. They live happily ever after.

Most of the love stories featured on the GMA News TV docudrama program “Wagas” follow a similar course. But love isn’t always rainbows and butterflies. Love stories can also end in heartbreak.

If you’ve ever cried yourself to sleep with the pain of losing someone you love, you know how hard it can be to find hope in such a situation. But “Wagas” shows us that even tearful stories can also offer remarkable lessons about the power of love.

Staying strong for the one you love gives them courage and hope.

At 17, Tom Fernandez and Jezaline Clemente met and fell in love. Tom was the campus heartthrob and Jeza was a student leader at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Their schoolmates thought they were a “match made in heaven.”

“Mas mature [‘yung relationship namin] kaysa mga previous, kasi talagang sinubukan naming ayusin ‘yung relasyon kahit nagkakainitan kami [minsan],” Tom said in an interview with the crew of “Wagas.”

But Tom and Jeza’s love story, unfortunately, didn’t end like a fairytale. A few months into their relationship, Jeza was diagnosed with leukemia. She had to undergo chemotherapy, leave school, and quit the student council.

Tom was devastated, but chose to stay strong and positive for Jeza. Even when Jeza seemed to give up, he remained undaunted. He believed that she would recover and that they would live a happy life together. This gave Jeza hope.

“Alam kong may sakit siya pero hindi ko sini-sink in sa ‘kin na malala ‘yung sakit na ‘yun kasi mukhang malakas pa naman siya, kaya may chance na siyang gumaling. Thinking positive na dapat gumaling siya,” Tom recalled.

Make every day you spend together count.

When Jeza was advised to spend the rest of her days with her loved ones, she lost hope. That’s when Tom came to her rescue. Together, they created a “bucket list” of the things they wanted to accomplish together. Jeza’s last wish was to watch the sunset with Tom.

“Kasi siyempre, bukod sa mahal ko siya, may mga plano kaming gusto naming matupad,” Tom shared.

Tom and Jeza’s love story may not have a happy ending, but Tom proved his devotion to Jeza by making her feel alive even in her darkest moments and on days when she felt alone.

Love is not about what you can get from your partner, but what you can give.

As a professional nurse with a demanding job, Felix Subida didn’t think he’d have the time for romance.

But that was until he met Liza.

Liza was a patient at the hospital where Felix worked. Diagnosed with diabetes and severe kidney problems, she was bed-ridden. But once Felix and Liza met, they knew they shared something special.

Felix married Liza despite being warned by many that her poor health would be a burden. Although he knew that she may not be around for long, Felix chose to love Liza because he knew that giving love–and not just receiving it– is its own reward.

Death may separate people, but love will always bond them together.

The nation was astounded when news of a woman marrying her dead fiancé hit the headlines.

The woman was Annalyn Tiñoso, a young woman from Isabela. The night before their would-be wedding, her fiancé, Ronnick Bacud, was killed in a road accident.

Despite opposition from both her family and Ronnick’s, she pushed through with the wedding. "Gusto ko lang naman matupad ang pangarap naming maikasal," she shared.

They may not be able to pursue their dreams together, but Annalyn’s love for Ronnick proved that even death cannot entirely separate two persons who love each other dearly.
