PH Embassy advised Pinoys to stop cockfighting activities in France

The Philippine Embassy advised Filipinos to end cockfighting activities in France as these are considered illegal and regarded as animal cruelty, with violators facing imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.

The Embassy issued the reminder after being alerted by French authorities and receiving complaints connected with the conduct of cockfighting activities.

"The Philippine Embassy wishes to inform the Filipino community that it has been alerted by the French authorities on illegal gambling and cockfighting activities being conducted by Filipinos in France. There have also been complaints about disturbances to the peace and littering in connection with such activities," it said.

Cockfighting, locally called sabong, is a traditional activity that involves the fighting of two trained roosters that have steel blades attached to their legs. There are also bets taken from the spectators of the sport.

The Embassy said cockfighting is illegal in France and considered animal cruelty that is punishable by three-year imprisonment and a fine of up to 45,000 euros.

"The Embassy further reminds Filipinos that living and working in France would entail respect for and observance of French laws. Let us maintain the good name and reputation of the Filipino community with our French hosts," it added. — BAP, GMA News
