Pinoy glass sculptor Ramon Orlina to grace HK art forum

Renowned Filipino artist Ramon Orlina will be among the class of glass as he joins an international forum in Hong Kong with other Asian glass artists to discuss their passion. Orlina — a two-time recipient of the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) Award in Visual Arts—was chosen as one of the speakers at the Art Forum of the Contemporary Art Glass in Asia - Cultural Exchange Program. The forum will be held on November 10 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Chiang Chen Studio Theater, carrying the topic “Asian Contemporary Art Glass - In the Eyes of the Artists." Joining Orlina are respected Asian glass artists:

  • Zhuang Xiao Wei, director of the Shanghai Museum of Glass;
  • Guan Donghai, head of the Glass Art Studio at Tsinghua University;
  • Joy Huang, a famous glass-blowing artist from Taiwan; and
  • Wong Kwok Chung, chairman of the Hong Kong International Hot Glass Association. The forum is taking after a two-week glass art exhibition, which was housed at the Exhibition Hall of Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Pao Yue-kong Library from Oct. 7 to 22. Together with the university, the forum and exhibit are presented by Kaleidoscope Studio, the first glass workshop in China. The project is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Hong Kong International Hot Glass Association. Glass artist A self-taught glass artist, Orlina is well-known in art circles in Southeast Asia for being the first to use the “cold method"—or the carving of figures and designs out of glass without the use of heat—with improvised tools at hand. With more than three decades in the craft, Orlina's reputation extends to Europe and the United States, where his works were showcased in various exhibits. Some of Orlina’s large glass installations can be found in other countries, such as:
  • “Fertile Crescent," a four-meter glass-and-steel piece standing near the National Stadium in Singapore;
  • “Quintessence," a 3.85 x 250-meter glass artwork at the Singapore Art Museum, and
  • “Basketball Mi Mundo," the winning entry in the second International Biennale of Basketball in the Arts in Madrid, Spain. Quattromondial Early this year, Orlina made waves in the art scene with the unveiling of the “Quattromondial," a 10 meter-high monument that he was commissioned to make specially for the 400th year anniversary of the University of Santo Tomas, where he earned a degree in architecture. The glass-and-bronze creation—which was praised by known art critic Cid Reyes as “monumental"—“features four human figures holding a Latin-inscribed ribbon, which loops around a globe that stands steadily aloft the four." The faces of the larger-than-life figures, which represent the four major groups in the UST community, were molded after:
  • university rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa (as the scholar-monk);
  • actor Piolo Pascual (as the male student);
  • Miss Universe semi-finalist Charlene Gonzales-Muhlach (as the academician); and
  • Orlina’s daughter, Monina (as the female student). - VVP, GMA News
