Andres Bonifacio kin to youths: Show the best Filipino qualities

On the 148th birth anniversary of Philippine national hero Andres Bonifacio, his great grand-nephew urged Filipino youths the world over to show the best qualities of Filipinos wherever they may be. In an interview with GMA News Online on Wednesday, Mylo Bonifacio, a direct descendant of Andres' brother Procopio, said Filipino youths "always need to strive to be the best they can be and never accept the status quo. There is always a better way to do things." Mylo said Filipino youths "need to remember their roots" -- Filipino values, culture, tradition, and history, whether they are residing in the Philippines or abroad. He said youths should "show the best Filipino qualities in whatever they do so that people will continue to recognize that Filipinos are truly world class." Procopio was killed along with his brother Andres on May 10, 1897. Until now, there are unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding their death. Andres Bonifacio was born on November 30, 1863 to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro. Bonifacio Day is held in honor of Andres Bonifacio, the “Father of the Philippine Revolution”. He is the founder and “Supremo” (leader) of the independence movement against Spain, the Kataastaasan Kagalang-galang na Katipunan nang nga Anak ng Bayan (KKK), or simply known as the Katipunan.  Malacañang in December 2010 issued Proclamation No. 84, which specified the dates on when this year’s holidays are to be observed. The proclamation specified that Bonifacio Day be observed on November 30. - VVP, GMA News
