A Filipina was arrested in Sri Lanka last week after authorities found 3.3 kilograms (kg) of cocaine in her possession, the news site Khaleej Times reported on Tuesday.   The Filipina, who was not named in the report, was said to be a transit passenger traveling from Sao Paolo in Brazil via Doha in Qatar.   Khaleej Times said the 3.3 kg of cocained found on her was worth LKRs 45 million (P16.2076 million) and was one of the biggest hauls of cocaine detection in the country recently.   This prompted the Sri Lankan Police Narcotics Bureau to believe that the island is being used as a transit point for smuggling cocaine.   Special drug detection teams were deployed to the country’s Bandaranaike International Airport to be on the lookout for drug smugglers. Another passenger arrested  Aside from the Filipina, a young Thai woman was arrested on Feb. 3 while attempting to smuggle 1.7 kg of cocaine worth LKRs 20 million, packed in a chocolate box.   Wrapped in cellophane and then coated with chocolate, the cocaine was found sealed inside the box of a popular brand of chocolates.   The box was found in her hand luggage along with infant food.   Acting on a tip, police arrested the 22-year-old woman as she passed the customs area in the airport.   The woman who had travelled from Bangkok to Peru via Sri Lanka last week was on her way back to Bangkok via the same route when she was arrested.   Both the Filipina and the Thai had similar travel patterns and have visited Sri Lanka before.   The Police Narcotics Bureau believes that the women are part of a major traffic ring and have been used by the same agents for the operations.   The report said Sri Lanka is believed to have been used as a transit point by drug smugglers in other countries including Brazil, Peru, Thailand and Nigeria. - VVP, GMA News
