12 Pinoy coaches in US to observe major league baseball spring training

Twelve Filipino baseball and softball coaches headed to the United States this week to take part in a 10-day US Major League Baseball (MLB) spring training program in Phoenix, Arizona.
 
Sponsored by the Sports United Division of the US Department of State’s Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs, the trip will give the coaches an opportunity to attend ball games and meet the players of several MLB teams including the:
  • Kansas City Royals,
  • San Francisco Giants, and
  • San Diego Padres.
 
The coaches’ trip will also include working with young American athletes, visiting high schools and universities, and participating in a Special Olympic event.
 
Sports United is the sports exchange program of the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The program has brought nearly 900 athletes from 58 countries to the US since 2003. This is the first time that Sports United Division is hosting the Philippines.
The 12 coaches from the Philippines include:
  • Eric Aguilar (Ilocos Norte);
  • Jesse Benjamin Bernal (Cebu);
  • Nina Buenaventura (Bulacan);
  • Felannie Caasi (Tagum);
  • Melania Gonzales (Bacolod);
  • Rhoy Landicho (Batangas);
  • Emmanuelito Llave (Manila); 
  • Rosevilla Mejos (Talisay);
  • Premo Melabo (Talisay);
  • Baidido Panda (Maguindanao)
  • Nina Serafico (Muntinlupa), and
  • Paulo Tabirara (Valenzuela).
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) members Jose Luiz Gomez and Nestor Benjamin Mijares accompanied the coaches in the US trip.
 
The visit of the Filipino coaches to the United States follows the successful visit of Major League Baseball great Ken Griffey Jr. to Manila last year. The program purportedly supports US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power diplomacy,” which embraces a range of diplomatic tools, including sports, to foster greater understanding among nations. - VVP/HS, GMA News
