Pinoy sentenced to six months in UAE jail for stealing P46-M gold dust
A Filipino assistant technician of a jewelry shop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was sentenced to six months in jail on Monday for stealing from his workplace 30 kilograms of gold dust worth Dh4 million (around P46.52 million). The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Filipino, 33, who admitted to the crime earlier this month, a report of the news site Gulf News said on Tuesday. The Filipino will be deported to the Philippines after completing his jail term. The primary verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days. According to the report, the Filipino claimed that the amount of gold dust he stole was much less than what was specified in the charge sheet. The report said the shop's Sudanese general manager discovered the missing gold dust after conducting an inventory. An earlier report on the news site Khaleej Times said the inventory was conducted as early as 2009. However, it was not until last September last year when the Filipino defendant was caught selling the stolen gold to a shop. The general manager said they found out later that the Filipino stole the gold dust and hid it in his lunch box. - VVP, GMA News
