After Eleanor Roosevelt, Bob Dylan, and US President Barack Obama, The Town Hall, a Broadway venue in New York City, welcomes world-renowned singer Lea Salonga.
The Tony and Olivier award-winning singer will once again hit the concert scene on May 4 before a number of fans and viewers at The Town Hall, a concert and theater venue between Sixth Avenue and Broadway Avenue in New York City, said a report by Filipino Express, a Filipino-American newspaper.
Dubbed as “Lea Salonga: The Journey Continues,” the concert is an “intimate evening” that will feature a selection of Broadway tunes, standard classics and today’s hits, as well as OPM (Original Pilipino Music) songs and Salonga’s decades-long “journey.”
Being an internationally-acclaimed singer, Salonga’s career is never futile. She has tried being a princess and a poor orphan.
In a review of her show “New York in June” at the Café Carlyle in New York City, where she was a cabaret singer, the New York Times commented, “Ms. Salonga’s bright, metallically edged voice is a shiny all-purpose instrument that confidently establishes its dominion over whatever musical setting surrounds it.”
Salonga began her musical stint at the age of seven in the hit musical “The King and I” by Repertory Philippines.
In 1989, Salonga was selected to play the lead-role Kim in the musical “Miss Saigon” which earned her the Olivier award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical.
Following her role as Kim, Salonga portrayed Éponine, a homeless child in the Broadway musical Les Misérables in 1993.
In 2011, she joined the ranks of Disney legends for giving singing voices to Disney characters Fa Mulan in “Mulan” and Jasmine in “Aladdin.”
The Town Hall was built in 1921 by activists, and began as a public forum for events that discussed pressing issues.
Over the decades, Eleanor Roosevelt, Carl Sandberg, Billie Holiday, Igor Stravinsky, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis and most recently, The Dalai Lama and President Obama have graced the stage.
The Town Hall also boasts the performances of celebrities Billy Joel, Graham Nash, Cyndi Lauper, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Al Gore, Bruce Springsteen, and Jay Leno among others.
Tickets to the concert are available through Ticketmaster. For more information, visit www.the-townhall-nyc.org. - Jon Lindley Agustin, VVP, GMA News
