Over 200 Pinoy workers due home from Syria

Over 200 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are scheduled to arrive in the Philippines from strife-torn Syria on Monday.

 

The OFWs are expected to arrive at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) aboard a chartered flight at 7:30 a.m., according to a report of radio dzBB.

 

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) teams will welcome the OFWs and assist them in clearing immigration and Customs procedures at the airport, the report said.

 

Most of the returning OFWs are undocumented. Their chartered flight was commissioned by the International Organization for Migration, the report said.

 

The Philippine government had been trying to repatriate Filipinos from Syria since violence there began in March 2011.

 

Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs had appealed to the families of Filipinos in Syria to provide the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers' Affairs (OUMWA) with latest information regarding their next-of-kin's current location and their contact details in Syria.
