A person with a positive attitude will more likely find success at work, the founder and CEO of "Leadership IQ," a top-rated provider of research and leadership training, said. According to a report of the news site Forbes earlier this year, Mark Murphy's "Leadership IQ" company tracked down 20,000 new hires and figured out why 46% of them failed within 18 months. Murphy said "even more surprising than the failure rate, was that when new hires failed, 89% of the time it was for attitudinal reasons and only 11% of the time for a lack of skill." He explained that the failed hires had "a lack of coachability, low levels of emotional intelligence, motivation, and temperament."
Asked if technical and soft skills were less important than attitude, Murphy said, " It’s not that technical skills aren’t important, but they’re much easier to assess." He explained that almost every job has tests for technical proficiency. However, he said "those tests don’t assess is attitude; whether a candidate is motivated to learn new skills, think innovatively, cope with failure, assimilate feedback and coaching, collaborate with teammates, and so forth."

Staying positive at work
The blog site “Positively Present” compiled a list of the benefits of staying positive at work:

(1) Less stress

A negative attitude leads to stress, the cause of a host of ailments ranging from insomnia, fatigue, loss of concentration, depression, hypertension, heart attack, or even stroke.   To have a positive outlook, always look at the bright side of things. Don't let petty things bring you down. Learn to roll with the punches when problems come.

(2) Happy co-workers People gravitate toward positive people. Nobody likes to work with a negative person who easily gets angry and irritated over little things. Your positive attitude will make your co-workers happy and comfortable in being with you.

Building rapport with your co-workers will make your job light and fun.
(3) Job security

Your negative attitude can make you irritable and impulsive, something no employer wants in an employee. In the long run, failing to control your negative emotions might cause you your job. You need a positive attitude to help you calm your mind and think better.

(4) Boundaries We may not have a perfect career. There may be some things about our jobs that we don't like. While we must always still do our best even if we don't have perfect jobs, we must also learn to set boundaries. "Keep in mind that you work to make money.  Nothing more, nothing less.  You are not obligated to do anything other than provide the services for which you were hired, so setting your limits may help you to keep an even keel in the workplace," the blog site said.

(5) Empowerment "Positively Present" said there are "times when you’ll have to deal with tasks you don’t enjoy, ridiculous deadlines and demands, and rude co-workers or managers." The site said we must empower ourselves by saying no to abusive situations or aggressive co-workers. "It’s not easy, but it will make you feel pretty good," the site said.

(6) Control   "Positively Present" said we control our lives, paths, decisions, and even our emotions. The blog site said we must make decisions that will benefit us and make us happy. "Don’t be afraid to leave your job and look for something better," it suggested. "As for difficulties with others in your office, try to be rational and forthright.  A lot of people are willing to meet standards of behavior if you let them know their actions are inappropriate.  And there’s always the HR department if all else fails," it added. - VVP, GMA News
