A Filipino teacher from Marikina — Mark John Gutoman — is representing the Philippines on Saturday at the "Mister International 2012" contest in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 21-year-old Gutoman is facing a lot of pressure in this competition, as two other Filipinos
before him have won in separate pageants held in Thailand this month:
- June Macasaet, who won the "Manhunt International 2012" title, and
- transgender Kevin Balot, who was named "Miss International Queen 2012."
Gutoman, a graduate of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, will be competing with
37 other contestants from all over the world in the swimwear, evening wear, and interview
categories.
While the finale will be on the contest organizers have already announced the winners
of three special awards:
- Singapore’s Ron Teh bagged the Thailand’s Favorite award,
- Ali Hammoud of Lebanon was named Most Handsome, and
- Luka Raco of Serbia was awarded Most Stylish.
Gutoman’s Filipino supporters are campaigning over Facebook and Twitter, asking fellow
Pinoys to vote for him, to secure him an automatic spot in the quarter finals.
Last year, Mister International Philippines Fhrancis Lopez also made it to the quarter finals
because of the votes he garnered from Filipino fans.
In the last seven years, Filipino candidates have managed to get into the quarter finals or win
the Mr. Photogenic award at the Mister International competition, including:
- Ken Escudero, a semifinalist (2006);
- Jeff Surio, top 16 (2008);
- Michael Manuel Manansala, top 16 (2009);
- Raphael Cruz Carlos, top 16 (2010), and
- Lopez, top 16 (2011).
