World's top 10 safest airlines
The Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Center recently released a list of the top 10 safest airlines in the world based on data from its own research. JACDEC is a German airline research company that started collecting information on accidents and aviation safety in 1989. The top 10 safest airlines are: (1) Finnair (2) Air New Zealand (3) Cathay Pacific (4) Emirates (5) Etihad Airways (6) Eva Air (7) TAP Portugal (8) Hainan Airlines (9) Virgin Australia (10) British Airways The airlines were ranked based on the number of incidents where fatalities or minor accidents were involved over a 30-year period. All of these airlines, except for British Airways had no fatalities or destroyed aircrafts for the past 30 years, according to a report from news site Fox News. In 2012, a total of 496 fatalities were reported on commercial flights, a bit fewer than the 498 fatalities in 2011. The most tragic accident was the Dana Air flight where 169 people perished when the plane crashed in Nigeria. A Bhoja Air flight follows where 127 were killed after crashing in Pakistan. There were also 30 planes that were destroyed with 44 hull losses. On the other hand, the bottom 10 airlines are: 51. SkyWest Airlines 52. South African Airways 53. Thai Airways 54.
