Philippine hero dog Kabang underwent facial reconstructive surgery at the University of California-Davis in the United States on Wednesday to prevent infection on her gaping wound. According to a post from the “Care for Kabang” official Facebook page, Dr. Boaz Arzi and Dr. Frank Verstraete operated on Kabang, removing her two upper fourth premolar teeth and reconstructing her left eyelid. She received a CT scan before the operation to determine the damage on her snout and upper jaw. The whole surgical procedure was completed without major problems, the group Care for Kabang said. “The procedures were completed without any complications, and Kabang’s recovery from anesthesia was uneventful,” the group reported. Kabang's next facial surgery is scheduled this March. Kabang, hero dog Kabang became a hero dog after throwing herself in the path of a speeding motorcycle to prevent two girls from being run over in November 2011. However, her snout and upper jaw were ripped off due to her heroic act. She gained international renown when social media sites carried her photo and story. Various individuals around the world donated money for her facial reconstructive surgery estimated at $20,000 (roughly P815,000). Kabang was flown to the US and put in the care of the UC-Davis school, which discovered that she had cancer and heartworm disease. After being treated for these diseases, she was approved for facial surgery. - VVP, GMA News
