For its innovative ad for a local cruise company, a team of business students from the University of the Philippines became the first team from Asia to be awarded as the global winner of Google's Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC).

In an entry posted on its Google for Students blog, Google announced that the UP team under Professor James Ryan Jonas was the global winner for the contest's AdWords category. The group, which was coded 600-583-5726, is composed of Jeanina Melissa K. Tee, Martin Joseph Alexandre R. Gonzaga, Wesley Paul S. Cortez, Francis Louie M. Karunungan, Nigel Willamson T. Lee and Erika Kathleen A. Uy. For its entry, the UP team created an online marketing campaign for “Sun Cruises Philippines”, a business that specializes in providing ferry as well as tour services to Corregidor Island.

The GOMC is a worldwide competition where college students are given a $250 budget by Google to create online marketing campaigns for a business or non-profit organization using Google AdWords and Google+. Over 50,000 students and professors from almost 100 countries have participated in the contest since it began in 2008, although this is the first time an Asian team won the global prize. - VVP, GMA News
