Fil-Am jazz crooner makes it to 'The Voice' Top 9

A Filipina-American singer made it to the Top 9 of the reality singing competition The Voice on Wednesday (Manila time) with her jazz-folk rendition of the N'Sync song "Bye Bye Bye."

TV Line reported that Amy Vachal's version of the 90's boyband hit took the 8th spot on the iTunes Singles Chart before the competition's announcement that night, contributing to her inclusion in the Top 9.

Coach Gwen Stefani shared that Vachal's performance made her think of a tour line-up for the 26-year-old while her coach Adam Levine said they were able to maximize the creativity they could have with performing song covers.

"They're infectious and they're popular, and they're also just a really good kinda display of your artistry and I think that should be commended and rewarded," Levine said.

Vachal had to be saved by Levine twice before bouncing back by making it to the top of the iTunes chart with her version of Drake's "Hotline Bling" and Taylor Swift's "Blank Space".

The singer from Somerset previously told NBC News that she worked odd jobs before doing session work for studios prior to The Voice.

She said the support she got from the Filipino community was overwhelming and recalled jumping into relief efforts for her mother's hometown after a "crazy hurricane" hit it last fall.

Vachal's fellow Team Adam members Jordan Smith and Shelby Brown will join her in the Top 9 with Team Gwen's Jeffrey Austn and Sunshine; Team Blake's Zach Seabaugh, Barrett Baber and Emily Ann Robertson; and Team Pharrell Williams’ Madi Davis. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
