Filipino lawyer asked to serve in DMW before fatal shooting in US - family

John Albert "Jal" Laylo was offered a position at the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) before he was shot and died while visiting relatives in the United States, according to his family on Saturday.

In a report by Sam Nielsen on Super Radyo dzBB, Laylo’s family confirmed that DMW Secretary Susan "Toots" Ople had asked the Filipino lawyer to be part of the agency.

His mother, Leah, said this was shared by her son before he passed away.

Leah said her son became close to Ople, who offered him a staff position at the DMW.

The lawyer’s family expected the DMW chief to visit on Saturday, the last day of public viewing of Laylo's remains.

An intimate service will be held on Sunday before Laylo’s remains will be brought to the crematorium.

Laylo’s remains arrived in the country on Wednesday.

Laylo became brain dead following a road shooting incident on June 19 in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He passed away in the morning of June 20 (Manila time). His mother had minor injuries.

Investigators already have a copy of the security video showing a black vehicle in the area after the shooting.

Police are looking into road rage or random shooting as possible motives for the crime.

However, the Philippine Consulate General in New York said it could be a case of mistaken identity. —VBL, GMA News
