The Philippine Consulate General in New York has advised Filipinos to remain vigilant amid the skyrocketing of major crimes in the city.
In an advisory, it cited data from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) which reported that city-wide crime incidences rose to 37 percent in 2022 compared to 2021.
According to the NYPD, grand larceny in New York was up by 49% this year; grand larceny auto by 46.2%; robbery, 39.2%; and burglary, 32.9%.
More transit crimes were also reported this year with a 55.5% increase while hate crimes were also up by 12.6% city-wide.
“Kababayans are reminded to be situationally aware at all times when outside their residences and to take necessary precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime,” the advisory read.
Last week, the Consulate reported a Filipino tourist from Cebu was assaulted near the Philippine Center in Manhattan, New York City — the 41st criminal act involving Filipinos in New York since 2021. — Sundy Locus/RSJ, GMA News
