New one-stop action center opens to simplify processes for overseas workers

New one-stop action center opens to simplify processes for overseas workers

Former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Marie Grace fondly remembers her time in Singapore, but it wasn't without its hurdles. She recalls the daunting task of navigating multiple offices just to fulfill her overseas employment requirements.

Back then, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), previously known as the POEA and OWWA, hadn’t consolidated its services, making it quite a challenge for individuals like her to gather needed documents, attend important seminars, and process their Overseas Employment Contracts (OEC) and OWWA membership.

While Grace spoke about these struggles, she chose not to blame the government. She commented, “We aim to work abroad, but if the processing is too complicated, that's a real hurdle for us.”

One ongoing issue for OFWs is the accessibility of support for their families back home, especially if any challenges arise while they’re overseas. There’s also the struggle of tracking down the benefits they're entitled to receive.

To address these issues, the government has officially launched the Bagong Pilipinas One-Stop OFW Action Center in Makati City, a project inaugurated by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. along with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.

This new center will act as a central hub, where the DMW and OWWA can offer vital services tailored specifically for Filipino workers and those coming back home.

President Marcos stressed the purpose behind the center, saying, “This will help remove bureaucratic headaches and simplify the system for our OFWs returning home. Instead of waiting in long lines and dealing with complex procedures, you will find an organized and quick way to access government services, benefits, and programs.”

While the DMW and OWWA will retain their headquarters and offices elsewhere, the government intends to create a single, recognizable location for OFWs seeking assistance.

As Secretary Hans Cacdac of the DMW pointed out, “Key frontline services provided by the DMW include support for returning workers, reintegration services, legal aid, and other vital assistance through the DMW action fund.”

However, the offerings at the Bagong Pilipinas One-Stop OFW Action Center will go beyond just DMW and OWWA support. President Marcos elaborated that the action center will also team up with other agencies like PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and SSS to make the process of obtaining documents and benefits straightforward and hassle-free for overseas workers.

To create a welcoming space for OFWs who visit the center, there will be a lounge area featuring complimentary espresso-based coffee and other drinks. The President remarked, “Even the little things matter for the priceless contributions of our OFWs.” — BAP, GMA Integrated News
