Sinulog Mass held at Barcelona's Sagrada Familia for Sto. Niño de Cebu
An international Mass was held at Sagrada Familia, a famous church in Barcelona, Spain, over the weekend to celebrate the Sinulog Festival in honor of the Sto. Niño de Cebu.
According to the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, the Sto. Niño de Cebu was presented at the Sagrada Familia during the January 19 Mass led by Barcelona Archbishop Cardinal Juan José Omella.
He was joined by Basilica Rector Josep Maria Turull, as well as other Filipino priests serving in Barcelona.
In his homily, Omella reflected on the symbolism of the Sto. Niño’s small stature, emphasizing that “despite its modest size, it embodies immense spiritual power and serves as a reminder of humility and divine strength.”
The cardinal also lauded the Filipino community for its unwavering faith and deep connection to their cultural and religious heritage, describing their devotion as a source of inspiration and unity.

The celebration started with a solemn procession of the Sto. Niño. It was the second time the replica was presented at the Sagrada Familia, following its inaugural presentation in 2021, as part of the Quincentennial Commemorations of Christianity’s introduction to the Philippines.
The prayers were also delivered in multiple languages, including Filipino, English, Spanish, Italian, and Catalan. Emblematic Philippine products were also presented during the offertory.

Over a thousand devotees from around the world joined the event and witnessed the traditional Sinulog dance performed by members of the community.
Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro expressed gratitude to the Filipino community and Barcelona’s Catholic hierarchy for their support in making the event possible.
“This celebration not only reaffirms the deep devotion of Filipinos to the Santo Niño but also strengthens the bond between our Filipino and Spanish communities,” Lazaro said. —Giselle Ombay/KG, GMA Integrated News
