DNA testing of Myanmar quake victims ongoing, says NBI

The results of a DNA test conducted on the relatives of a husband and wife missing after the Myanmar quake will not be available for at least two weeks, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said.

“Wala pa result… Mga two weeks pa iyon,” NBI Director Jaime Santiago said in a message to GMA News Online.

In a separate message on Tuesday, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega said that the samples were taken by the NBI from relatives who flew in from Dumaguete last week.

“NBI should confirm in a few weeks if there is a match with the DNA samples taken from two very decomposed corpses whom some Filipinos in Myanmar say, may be the missing spouses,” said De Vega.

The two are among the four Filipinos who were reported missing after the magnitude-7.7 earthquake that hit Myanmar last month. Two have already been confirmed dead.

The DNA testing on the families is being conducted in hopes of speeding up the search for their loved ones. — BM, GMA Integrated News
