Filipino dad killed in Chicago crash; his baby born the next day
NEW YORK — A Filipino father was killed after his sport utility vehicle (SUV) was rammed by a getaway car driven by thieves fleeing a crime scene in downtown Chicago.
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Mark Carlo Arceta, was on his way to work when the crash occurred.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the suspects were fleeing after a smash-and-grab burglary at a high-end luxury fashion store when one of their vehicles slammed into Arceta's SUV.
The victim's car was crushed like a tin can from the impact, as the suspects' vehicle was speeding at more than 100 miles per hour.
Arceta was rushed to Northwestern Hospital but later died from severe injuries.
The smash-and-grab took place early morning on September 11, when seven suspects broke into the store on Michigan Avenue and stole merchandise worth up to $1 million.
Wife gives birth
Just a day after the victim's death, his wife, Roanne Masangcay, gave birth to their second child. She had filed for paternity leave on his behalf, making the tragedy Arceta's last day of duty.
Roanne said in a telephone interview that her husband was a very good person.
"They took a very loving father, a really good partner, and a very good dad. He was supposed to be with us," she said.
The suspects, who according to Chicago Police already had multiple criminal records, are all facing multiple felony charges, including murder, burglary, and retail theft.
The Arceta family is now raising funds to help cover funeral expenses and support the needs of the bereaved family. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
