Marcos honors OFW who saved baby in Hong Kong fire
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday lauded the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who protected her three-month-old ward during the massive fire that hit a high-rise residential complex in Hong Kong.
During the launch of the new amenities at NAIA Terminal 3, Marcos mentioned that he met domestic helper Rhodora Alcaraz, who was trapped with the baby inside a smoke-filled room for hours during the fire incident last month.''Sa kabila ng panganib na kanyang hinarap ay pinili niyang iligtas ang sanggol na kanyang inaalagaan. Pinapakita nito ang likas na malasakit ng Pilipino sa kanyang kapwa,'' Marcos said in his message.
(Despite the threat to her life, she chose to save the infant that she's taking care of. This action manifests the genuine trait of Filipinos of showing concern for other people.)
Marcos vowed that his administration is doing everything to provide better services for OFWs.
Representatives from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Hong Kong, Philippine Consulate General, Department of Migrant Workers, and Migrant Workers Office visited Alcaraz at the hospital when she was undergoing medical treatment.
The OWWA Regional Office also visited her family in the Philippines to assure them of assistance.
The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong had said that 89 Filipinos were safe and accounted for amid the fire.
However, it said that one OFW died in the deadliest fire that hit Hong Kong in 10 years. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
